Sir Roger Penrose

Sir Roger Penrose is known by his non-periodic tiling. As previously mentioned, Penrose Tiling is a non-periodic tiling (needs to be completed with more than one geometric figure), which is "forbidden" for crystal structures. However, a non-periodic structure was found in an alloy by Dan Shetchman, which later was named quasicrystal, because most of its characteristics (but not every single one of them) match with the ones of the crystals. 

Sir Roger Penrose was born in Colchester, England, August 8, 1931. He was supposed to study medicine, but he changed his mind, and decided he wanted to focus on math. At first, his parents were angry at him, however, he went to University College of London with a bachellor of sciences in mathematics, and he won Class Honors.

He continued his studies on mathematics and received Ph.D in Algebraic Geometry, but he also got interested in physics. Everyone interested in physics or mathematics has heard about Penrose, not only because of his non-periodic tiling, but because he also collaborated with Stephen Hawking on black holes. 

He has been awarded with many prizes and honors. One of the most important was in 1990, when he was awarded with the Albert Einstein Medal for an outstanding work about him. It is also important to mention that nowadays, Sir Roger Penrose is a really famous Physician and he's one of the most outstanding and appreciated of them all.
